Internet Connection Sharing In XP Part 3

Configuring Internet Connection Sharing

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing setup is very straightforward. It is also quite similar to Windows 2000 Internet Connection Sharing. To configure ICS, you need to configure both an ICS host and the clients on the network.

The Wizard configures the selected network settings. If the Wizard is running on a Windows XP computer, the screen as shown in Figure 8.13 appears. Select Just finish the wizard and click Next.

When configuration is complete, the Wizard's Completion screen appears, shown in Figure 8.14. Click Finish to exit.

Creating a Static Port Mapping

To support applications or services, such as a Web site that sits behind an ICS host, you need to create a static port mapping for the ICS host. This permits users outside the internal network to initiate a session with the host providing the service or application. To create this mapping, perform the following steps.

1.
Click Start, then Settings, then Network Connections. Right-click the connection that is configured as the ICS host. Select Properties from the context menu.

2.
Select the Advanced tab on the ICS connection properties sheet, and then click the Settings button, shown in Figure 8.15.

3.
The Advanced Settings property sheet appears. Put a check mark in the box of each service for which you want to enable external access, as shown in Figure 8.16.

4.
Once the check mark has been placed in the box for a service, the Service Settings dialog box with the default port mappings for that service is displayed, as shown in Figure 8.17. Enter the name or IP address of the host providing the service. Click OK to accept.

5.
If the ports for that service do not match what you desire, or if the service you want to configure does not appear in the list, click the Add button. A blank Service Settings dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 8.18.

6.
Provide the following information for the service you are configuring:

  • Description of the service: The name of the service you provide. This can be a friendly name.

  • Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network.

  • External port number for the service: Enter the port that remote hosts use to connect to this application or service. Also specify if the ports are TCP or UDP.

  • Internal port number for the service: Enter the TCP or UDP ports on the service running on the internal host.

7.
Click OK, and then close the ICS properties sheet.

ICS Considerations

If you are looking for a simple-to-implement, cost-effective Internet connection sharing service for your small home or office network, Windows XP ICS fits the bill nicely. Configuring ICS beyond these basic options, however, is not possible. Although this makes enabling or disabling its use or setting up applications and services to run through the ICS host a piece of cake, it may make ICS not the best choice for NAT-ing your network. Name resolution and address assignment methods used by ICS may conflict with services currently offered on your network. Keep these things in mind when you are thinking about implement-ing ICS:

  • The default range of IP addresses and subnet mask assigned to the internal network by ICS cannot be changed.

  • A static IP address can be assigned, but it is possible for a brief duplicate IP address situation to occur on the network due to the way that ICS assigns IP addresses. The host configured to use the static address is not affected, but the host that receives that IP address dynamically experiences a brief connectivity problem until it is assigned a new address by the ICS server.

  • The internal interface of the computer configured for ICS is always set to 192.168.0.1, and it overwrites whatever static IP address was assigned to that interface previously. Any TCP/IP connections between the ICS host and other hosts on the internal network are broken and must be subsequently reestablished. If persistent drive mappings are established on your network clients to connect to the ICS host by its previous IP address, the administrator must change those mappings.

  • Only one public address can be assigned to the external ICS interface.

  • The ICS computer intercepts all requests for name resolution and forwards them to a DNS server on the Internet.
